Fierce Wildfires Continue to Batter Northern Spain
Local media, citing emergency services, report ongoing fires in five locations near the city of Leon. While over 1,500 evacuees displaced by earlier northern wildfires this week are being permitted to return, about 50 Leon residents remain under evacuation orders as firefighting efforts continue.
This year alone, wildfires have ravaged approximately 36,000 hectares (88,958 acres) of forest land across Spain. Official statistics reveal that more than 15 large-scale fires have erupted in 2025, surpassing the country’s 10-year average.
The escalating wildfire situation underscores the urgent threat posed by rising temperatures and dry conditions in the region.
