Polish Military Investigates Drone Crash Near Arms Depot
The incident took place on January 28 at the 2nd Radio-electronic Center in Przasnysz, roughly 90 kilometers north of Warsaw. A duty officer observed the drone flying over the base before it lost control and fell near a weapons storage area.
Soldiers quickly secured the UAV and moved it into a military building for examination. The military police were notified shortly afterward and began formal investigative procedures, which included securing the drone and interviewing witnesses, according to a spokesperson for the commander-in-chief of the military police.
The crash highlights growing concerns in Poland and among NATO members about unauthorized drone activity near sensitive infrastructure and military sites. These worries have intensified following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the widespread availability of low-cost UAV technology.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of drone-related events across Central and Eastern Europe. Authorities in Germany and the Baltic states have reported multiple sightings of unidentified drones near military training areas, ports, and energy facilities, raising fears of espionage and testing of security measures.
While there is currently no evidence to suggest the Przasnysz crash was deliberate, officials have not dismissed any possibilities, including operator error, technical failure, or intentional surveillance.
Poland’s Ministry of Defense has not publicly disclosed the origin, type, or capabilities of the drone, including whether it carried recording devices or any payloads.
