New EU Formaldehyde Limit: TOPSUN Silicone Leather Needs No Reformulation

Any product exceeding 0.062 mg/m³ formaldehyde emission is banned from the EU marketplace. TOPSUN Silicone Leather Co., Ltd. delivers formaldehyde-free material containing no formaldehyde releasers or crosslinkers, meeting the new regulatory limit without reformulation.

Set out in Entry 77 of REACH Annex XVII under Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1464, the regulation classifies formaldehyde as a Category 1B carcinogen. Furniture and wood articles must comply with the 0.062 mg/m³ emission limit; other indoor articles follow a 0.080 mg/m³ threshold. A second compliance phase will extend the 0.062 mg/m³ limit to vehicle interiors from 6 August 2027, tested to ISO 12219-1.

Conventional synthetic leather manufacturing often relies on formaldehyde-containing crosslinkers and finishing resins. The updated EU limit of 0.062 mg/m³ is roughly half the widely adopted E1‑grade benchmark (0.124 mg/m³, EN 717‑1). Many products previously passing E1‑grade testing will no longer satisfy Europe’s tighter emission requirements.

This chemistry eliminates core VOC‑emission sources. The material completes REACH SVHC screening for more than 200 restricted substances and holds ISO 10993‑5 biocompatibility certification.
